Infant Nutrition

Many significant changes have taken place in the infant nutrition sector over the past number of years. Of particular note is the evolution of a more sophisticated infant milk formula. Through the inclusion of ingredients such as LCPUFA’s, protein fractions and hydrolysed proteins many infant formula producers have carved a unique niche for themselves in the market place.

Representing over half of the total market in volume terms, Asia is by far the largest and fastest growing market for infant milk formula. The infant milk formula sector in Asia is a very dynamic market offering significant opportunities for ingredient manufacturers and infant nutrition companies alike. China represents the lion share of this market and has emerged as the unparalleled leader in growth terms. Stable economic growth, the one child policy, an increase in the number of working mothers and rising disposable income levels are among the factors contributing to growth.

Two key innovation drivers underpin development within the infant milk formula sector; proximity to human breast milk and enhanced nutrition. The primary development platforms for the sector include visual and brain development, reduced allergenicity, improved digestibility and intestinal development.

Medical Nutrition

Nutritional status is a very important factor in the recovery process from all kinds of surgical interventions. Nutrition also has a well-recognised role to play in fighting disease. Many of today’s most chronic conditions require long-term use of sip feed products. When a patient needs to consume a sip feed for months or even years, then it becomes critically important to enhance product acceptability in terms of palatability, flavour, texture, viscosity, variety and service.

The link between obesity chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, strokes, diabetes and metabolic disorders are well documented. According to the WHO an estimated 17 million people die of cardiovascular disease, particularly heart disease and strokes, every year. This is equivalent to almost 1/3 of all deaths globally. By 2020 heart disease and stroke will become the leading cause of both death and disability worldwide with the number of fatalities set to reach over 20 million per year and in excess of 24 million by 2030.

Sports & Lifestyle Nutrition

The face of sports nutrition has changed in recent years from being a niche sector of specialist sports products to meeting mass-market demand. The traditional sports nutrition consumer accepted that sports nutrition products were purely functional to assist in performance and development and issues such as taste, texture and convenience held little relevance. The introduction of mainstream consumers to this market and a demand for everyday lifestyle nutrition has put greater emphasis on priorities such as convenient tasteful offerings and more nutritious variants of everyday products

Nutrition bars, currently worth in excess of US$2 billion market in the US, are still at development stages in Europe and gaining market share rapidly. Due to the benefits bars offer in terms of convenience and taste they are the fastest growing sector within the sports nutrition arena. Outside of nutrition bars, health and ‘better for you’ options are driving growth in the snack bar market also. In general, consumers are looking for alternative healthier, indulgent on the go options. The demand for more convenient offerings in the sports nutrition market has also spurred an increase in demand for ready to drink nutrition shakes and meal replacement beverages. Taste is of paramount importance in this sector due to the high protein contents of these applications.
